On 26 February 2014, GEG took part in the Geotechnical Engineering in Rehabilitation of Built Heritage seminar, held by the Portuguese Engineers Association (Ordem dos Engenheiros) in the Auditorium of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), Porto.
In the seminar, GEG did a presentation of the project “Lisbon’s Internal Ring Roadway (CRIL) – Benfica Tunnel“, with emphasis on the suspension of the Águas Livres and Francesas Aqueducts.
Besides other singularities, such as crossing the Sintra railway line, crossing the hydraulic channels of Damaia and Alcântara, controlling the settlements of the buildings that are next to the tunnel, on design and during construction, the construction of the Benfica tunnel made it necessary the suspension of the centenary aqueducts of Francesas and Águas Livres.
The suspension of these centenary aqueducts on the top slab of Benfica tunnel required a detailed study of the structural behaviour and the use of innovative structural solutions to ensure the minimum displacement, in order to not affect the aqueducts structure.
