The industrial waste landfill in Viana de Castelo, Northern Portugal, was built in 2007 to collect the industrial non-hazardous waste of the paper producer company PORTUCEL.
GEG was responsible for the complete construction supervision and progress monitoring of this work, which included the approval of materials and construction processes, the follow-up of earthworks, waterproofing and the slopes’ stability as well as checking and approving the bill of quantities for payment purposes.
The area of the landfill is of about 38.000 m2. Its capacity is approximately 18.000 tonnes per year for an estimated period of 10 years. The project included the drainage system of leachate water, water pumping system and its electrical infrastructure and necessary energy supply, rainwater drainage system, biogas drainage system, waterproofing system and the paved and unpaved internal access roads.
One of the most important works concerned the adequate sealing barrier of the base and slopes of the 2 cells to ensure the necessary waterproofing conditions and protection of the geological and geohydrologic resources.
The project involved approximately 100.000 m2 of soil excavation and 15.000 m2 of embankment construction, reusing excavated soils from the site and borrow materials.
