D. João II Station was, at the time of construction, a terminus station in the yellow line of Metro of Porto. This station’s design comprised the traction’s power supply station, extension of the metro line and infrastructures along 350 m, and the telecommunications and signalling system, supporting a big part of this line. As there was no space to build this building over the street, GEG designed an underground structure, placed below the station.
The maximum depth for the excavation was of about 6,30 meters, being supported by soldier piles and wood lagging. The soldier piles were driven before excavation beginning, and the wood lagging was installed as the excavation proceeded down. The temporary structure was supported by struts.
One of the biggest challenges was to design and build a complete metro station in the middle of one of the busiest avenues in Gaia and to compatible railway and roadway.
GEG was responsible for the preliminary and detailed design, including on-site support, of all disciplines, supported by a strict relation with Metro do Porto.
