World

GEG began its internationalisation process in 2003 and since then we developed engineering solutions in more than 30 countries. GEG is currently present in the markets of Europe, Latin America, Middle East, Africa, Maghreb and Asia, developing studies, projects and local partnerships which allows GEG to have a solid and sustainable activity in each territory where intervenes.

Integrated in consortia, either operating with international and local companies or working directly for owners and investors, GEG develops engineering design and assures management responsibilities, on behalf of the client, assuming the command of all stages of the design process, from the economic, financial and technical feasibility study and construction planning schedule to the coordination of all the variables of its execution.

At the same time, supported by a network of renowned scientific partners such as universities and scientific centres, GEG assumes the realisation of projects in other specialised fields, making it possible to offer a vast scope of integrated services.

Europe

Established in the city of Porto, the portfolio of GEG’s projects in Portugal sums up the first stages of its history, which joins together with the recent history of civil engineering in Portugal and the remarkable development of its infrastructures, the growth of quality of life, the urban renewal, and the emergence of remarkable structures (in the domains of science, health, sports, tourism, water, and environment).

The projects carried out by GEG in the most diverse sectors are the evidence and the reflex of a course that followed and projected itself in the world.

In Europe, GEG relies upon a network of renowned partners, namely internationally famous engineering and architecture companies. The establishment of this network has represented for GEG not just a huge technical asset, but also the participation in outstanding projects, and the possibility of developing the management and the coordination of projects which imply outstanding scale, high complexity, and multiculturalism.

In 2007 GEG began the development of projects in other European countries, participating in the projects for two hotels in the capital cities of Belgium and Italy. The studies and projects developed by GEG in Europe have had their focus on their character and sustainable vision, first in Switzerland, and most recently in the Faroe Islands, Denmark. In the United King, GEG developed a dynamic study performed in the task of rehabilitating the Cutty Shark ship, in a partnership with the University of Porto.

Africa

In Africa GEG’s focus has concentrated first on the Portuguese-speaking countries, Angola and Mozambique.

Being present in Angola since 2003, GEG found here one of its most important international markets. Ensuring highly qualified services and a relationship of effective proximity with its clients, GEG develops projects in different parts of the country – with a particular significance in Luanda, the capital city – and operates either in the public or in the private sector. In this market, the highlights are the countless projects for buildings, including Namibe Fishery Academy, and between 2013 and 2016, geological and geotechnical specialized consultancy, developed with a group of geologists in the Laúca Hydropower Plant.

GEG began the development of projects in Mozambique in 2007, with the project of Inhambane and Maxixe piers. It gained strength in this market in 2015, with the opening of the company GEG Mozambique. Here the highlights go to development of studies and projects for ports, railway and road transports, hydroelectric plants, buildings and urbanisation.

Since 2010 GEG has also been involved in the development of studies and projects in several African countries, namely in Guinea, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Ghana, Liberia, Malawi, Nigeria and Rwanda. Here the highlights are the viability studies developed in Liberia and concerning 185 km road rehabilitation; the project for Bata Palace, in Equatorial Guinea, or the studies developed for Simandou Port, in Guinea.

In Africa the economic and social development is made step after step, with each project and study we develop. The projects we develop – efficient transport networks, hydroelectric plants and water transport, buildings and urbanisations, ports and maritime works – and the solutions we create – with a sustainable vision for on entire life cycle – do have a positive and significant impact on the communities where we make our interventions.

Latin America

GEG highlighted its entry in Latin America in 2010 with the development of projects in Brazil, and since then it has expanded its range of action to Mexico, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, and Jamaica.

As a result of the establishment of a solid and profitable partnership with Intertechne, a Brazilian engineering design company, GEG carried out projects and studies for hydroelectric plants in Brazil, Peru and Ecuador, among other services that have been developed in other parts of the world.

From 2012 on GEG expanded its activity and presence in Mexico, with the development of studies and projects for important works in the areas of Transports and Water. The highlights go to projects that have been developed for Mota-Engil, the renowned Portuguese constructor, such as the 70 km-highway between Cardel and Poza Rica; the highway «Siervo de la Nación», in the city of Mexico; the studies that have been developed to support the tenders for highways and Guadalajara Metro; and, also, the Canal Colima water transportation design. The breadth and complexity of the projects developed in this country made possible a deep learning of all the knowledge associated with local resources, economy, geology, and technologies.

This way, GEG has built throughout these years in Latin America a high-skilled team, able to provide an efficient and integrated response, based on experience and knowledge, supported by a solid network of local partners, in any of the three areas it operates: Buildings, Transports, and Environment.

Asia

For GEG this a market full of potentialities where the company expects to expand its participation in the next years. The entry in the Asian market took place in 2015, with the start of a project in Timor.

The high level of development that is expected in that part of the world at the level of transport infrastructures and of the urgent need of interventions on urban planning, water and sanitation infrastructures promote the necessity of investments and represent a complex challenge; a challenge GEG wants to meet with the purpose of contributing to an improve the quality of life in this part of the globe.

Maghreb

2007 marked GEG’s entry in the Maghreb market. Libya, a country with a fast-growing economy in the African continent, and historically committed in the renovation of its infrastructures, meant the first country where GEG has established its first commercial contacts. Almost at the same time when it entered the Libyan market, GEG performed its first works in Algeria and in Morocco, in 2007.

Benefiting from the vast experience collected in the areas of geology and geotechnics, GEG participates in the project for the renovation of the railway connection between El Gourzy and Biskra (Algeria) and performs consulting services on risk analysis and protection systems for the Zaouiat Ait-Mellal Tunnel, the longest one of a Moroccan highway and the most important work in the roadway enterprise that connects the cities of Agadir and Marrakesh.

Yet, it was In Libya that GEG did establish itself, in 2009, with the launching of GEG Libya. Having been invited by international consortia led by Odebrecht, the Brazilian constructor, GEG involved itself deeply in projects that were central to the future of the country such as the Third Ring Road of Tripoli and the Libyan capital city’s new International Airport.

In parallel, GEG has fostered a fruitful relationship of partnerships and collaboration with Libyan universities, such as with the University of Seventh of April Azzawiah (Sabratha) and with the Al-Manar University of Tripoli. Seeking the creation of value in the countries and communities where it integrates itself, GEG settled a compromise with Libya that surpassed the opportunities of business and the strictly entrepreneurial activity, a compromise which is now suspended due to the country’s complex situation.
