The new Children’s Hospital of Coimbra is located near the University Hospital. The building, in its configuration and volume, follows the terrain and is integrated along its very sharp slope.

The building is located in an area of difficult morphology and very complex hydrogeology. For this reason, the solutions proposed for the transmission of loads (foundations) and support (retainers) required a comprehensive analysis of the structure. Those aspects should be reflected in the superstructure. For the earth retaining structures was considered and outlined a set of solutions to meet the project targets in terms of architecture and structure, which consisted mainly of three types of solution: peripheral containment multi-anchored curtain, retaining walls with buttresses and current and reinforced earth retaining walls.

The possibility of earthquakes has been an important consideration in the design phase of the project of building a hospital in a seismic region.
