Luís Gonçalves completed his first degree in Civil Engineering in July 1999, in Bridges and Structures at Engineering Faculty in Porto. He later completed a post-graduate degree in Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (2002) and a post-graduate course in Highways and Transport Engineering (2012), both by the Engineering Faculty in Porto.
He joined GEG in September 1999 as a Structural Designer and currently is the Roadways & Railways department director. As a department director he is in charge of coordinating and allocating human resources to different assignments, optimizing and enhancing the work efficiency inside the department, controlling the progress and performance in each assignment, identifying training needs, proposing software upgrades and equipment improvements, evaluating the efficiency of undertaken trainings, providing the necessary technical support to personnel operating in the department. It is also responsible for the contact with the client and for meeting deadlines within budget and expected quality.
His experience as a designer and project manager include the design of new steel and concrete bridges, refurbishment projects and widen existing bridges as well as concrete and new buildings, earth retaining structures, urban underground constructions. He also has the competence to develop studies and projects for road infrastructures systems, in particular in the fields of road, earthworks, paving, signalling and drainage, and a broad knowledge of national and international standards in these areas.
