The right bank of the River Douro, near Arrábida Bridge, was the location of Massarelos bridge pier. The client Helitours wanted to rehabilitate and expand this space, with the purpose of preparing it to become a heliport platform. GEG was responsible for the development of the structural inspection, the structural design of the new structure and the rehabilitation design of the pre-existent bridge-pier.

The visual analysis of the pre-existent Massarelos bridge pier revealed a noticeable degradation. The scope of this project included the data analysis of the pre-existing structures and the definition of constructive solutions adapted to the local conditions. The intervention resulted in the partial demolition of the slab on the west side of the bridge pier and the construction of a new platform for a heliport.
