The development of modern, efficient and high-performance railway systems is one of the most important areas of expertise in GEG.

Besides track design, retaining structures, platforms and earthworks, areas like geotechnics, drainage, bridges and railway tunnels are consolidated as one of the most qualified areas of intervention in the company.

In the railway sector, GEG has been developing consultancy for the rail network in Portugal for more than 20 years, and more recently, feasibility studies of new tracks and railway rehabilitation studies in Algeria, Mozambique and Iraq.

In the field of high-speed railways, GEG was involved in the national network development studies and designs, namely with the rail stretches linking Poceirão to Caia, and also Porto to Vigo, during the tender phase. In this area, a number of studies were carried out, in partnership with universities concerning the dynamic analysis of railway bridges and their interaction with the track compositions especially at transition zones (structure/backfill).
