The demolition and construction of Al-Zawraa sports complex was awarded to Boland Payeh Co. as a turn-key contract. Al-Zawraa project consists of 6 major deliverables: demolition of all existing structures, design and construction of a 12,500 seater stadium, hotel, swimming pool, sports hall, landscaping and access routes to the complex.
Al-Zawraa stadium, home of the biggest and most popular football club in Iraq, is placed in a residential area in the middle of Baghdad. Therefore, one of the biggest challenges of this project was the design and construction of the complex access roads to provide an easy entry/exit to the stadium while preventing traffic in the area. In addition, the deployment area (35,000 m2) required a clear planning so the design, procurement, construction and all the above mentioned deliverables can be done simultaneously. To complete this project, were used more than 2,000 tons of reinforcement rebar, 24,000 m3 of concrete and 5,400 m2 of formwork. The earthworks volume surpassed 26,000 m3.
