Metro of Porto – Feasibility study of the lines of Campo Alegre and São Mamede
ABOUT
The third phase of expansion of Metro of Porto includes the construction of two new metro lines, Campo Alegre and São Mamede lines, with a total extension of 16 km and 22 stations.
These 2 new lines will serve important residential and commercial zones as well as universities and hospitals.
GEG was responsible for the conceptual design and project management, supported by a strict relation with the client Metro do Porto.
Campo Alegre line
The Campo Alegre line study included the conceptual design of the earth retaining structures, structures and architecture, geology, telecommunications, power and drainage systems of 9 km of line and 13 underground and surface stations: Matosinhos Sul, S. Salvador, Parque da Cidade, Molhe, Império, Pasteleira, Fluvial, Lordelo, Botânico, Faculdade de Letras, Palácio, Cordoaria and S. Bento.
Some of them were huge engineering and management challenges in order to achieve all the existent constraints.
São Mamede line
The São Mamede line design included the study of 7 km of line and 9 underground and surface stations: Pólo Universitário, FEUP, Hospital S. João, ISCAP, São Mamede, Pedra Verde, Élaine Sanceau, Xanana Gusmão, São Gens.
One of the biggest challenges was to define the metro’s urban insertion. The Engineering together with Architecture and Urbanism, designed solutions aiming to allow a good integration of metro, with economic and functional structures. The proposed solutions were also defined in a way to guarantee the security and comfort of people who live around the new line.
