2 June, 2012

The International Conference of “Durable Structures: from construction to rehabilitation” promoted by LNEC was held in Lisbon, between May 31 and June 1, 2012.

This conference aimed to create a forum for discussion and knowledge transfer between researchers, structural engineers, contractors, manufacturers of repair materials, owners and facilities managers. At the conference the following topics were discussed: building materials, deterioration processes, assessment structures’ lifetime, test and diagnostic techniques of structures, repair and treatment methods of the concrete, steel protection, sustainable concrete, structure monitoring, among others.

GEG participated in this conference with the presentation of the rehabilitation design of Porto’s Sports Pavilion, which is located in Porto and had opened in 1952. The engineering design project was developed between 2007 and 2011 in collaboration with the architect José Carlos Loureiro, who is the author of the original project. The project included two complementary programs: the rehabilitation of the existing building and the structural design of the new adjacent buildings.

In the process of refurbishment of the Porto’s Sports Pavilion, the structure has been exhaustively studied, monitored and evaluated before the intervention.
