ABOUT
Karbala International Airport is a new project that is being developed on an approximately 45 million m2 of total site area, set between the towns of Karbala, Al-Hillah and Al-Najaf.
The region currently hosts more than 12 million pilgrims during major events calendar Shiite, so the Iraqi authorities are planning to create an international-standard airport, with the purpose to promote the tourism in the region.
The original master plan developed by the design consultant (ADP-I) was divided into three Phases:
Phase 2
6mppa (future expansion)
Phase 3
9mppa (future expansion)
The scope of the project concerns Part 1 of Phase 1 of the KIA project which comprises a passenger terminal with an estimated total area of approx. 40,000 m2 and support buildings. The operational capacity of the runway, with a length of 4.5 km, will be “4F” (according to ICAO designation).
The Project is intended to be designed and constructed to comply with local and international codes and standards and must be licensed for operation by the Iraq Civil Aviation Authority (ICAA).
