ABOUT
This project took place between 2007 and 2008 and concerns the rehabilitation of a vacant building for the installation of the new School of Healthcare Technologies.
This building is located in Vila Nova de Gaia and represents an important center of Health Research in Portugal.
The structure of the existing building consisted on massive walls of granite stones and roof trusses in wood.
Structural solution
GEG was responsible for the rehabilitation of the old building.
The intervention took advantage of the exterior masonry elements, which were reinforced to support the new structure. This new structure of beams and columns was also created with new floor slabs and new roofs.
The interior walls and slabs had been demolished, as well as the roofs.
The new structural elements were executed in steel and concrete.
The existing foundations have been first evaluated and only then decided what level of intervention would be adopted (taking advantage of the existing ones, running a small enhancement or alternatively performing new foundations).
